Ho raccolto una sfida, questa settimana. Partecipo infatti, come ormai da qualche anno, al Patriotic Tablescape blog hop di Chloe Crabtree, ma con una novità: è stato infatti chiesto alle non americane di celebrare il proprio paese, anziché cimentarsi nella tradizionale tavola bianca, rossa e blu con cui negli USA si festeggia il 4 luglio. Sembra facile, vero? Invece non lo è.
Diciamolo, dai: il nostro non è un paese che spicchi per culto della bandiera, anzi, si tinge davvero di bianco, rosso e verde praticamente solo durante le sfilate degli Alpini e i mondiali di calcio. Ecco perché una tavola tricolore, purtroppo, non sarebbe così rappresentativa dell’essere italiani. E allora? E allora, dato che, stereotipi culinari a parte, è un dato di fatto che ad accomunare davvero gli Italiani è il culto della tavola e della famiglia, ho pensato al classico “pranzo della domenica”, declinato però in bianco, rosso e verde.
Vista la stagione, non ho resistito all’idea di apparecchiare in giardino: in fondo, cosa fa più bella Italia di una allegra compagnia che festeggia nella corte di una vecchia casa di campagna, all’ombra di una pergola o – come nel mio caso – di un grande albero? Qui purtroppo ne ho potuta rappresentare solo una versione ridotta, ma se con la fantasia trasformiamo questo tavolino in una lunga tavolata, avremo davanti agli occhi piatti ricolmi di delizie che passano di mano in mano, risate, adulti che si attardano a tavola chiacchierando tra un bicchiere di vino e l’irrinunciabile caffè e bambini che scorrazzano gioiosi nei dintorni.
Ecco quindi che come base non potevo scegliere altro che una luminosa tovaglia bianca di quelle che le nostre nonne ricamavano per il corredo, messa però in modo un po’ sportivo, come è giusto che sia per un informale pranzo in campagna.
I piatti, scelti in omaggio al tricolore, hanno una certa età, e la dimostrano tutta: del resto, è ovvio che una vecchia casa di famiglia sia arredata con oggetti pieni di ricordi!
I bicchieri, se pur recenti, hanno il giusto stile: rustico ma classico. Moderne ma dalla linea tradizionale le posate, e moderni anche i tovaglioli, che riprendono però il ricamo della tovaglia.
E le decorazioni? Immancabili, semplici fiori spontanei, che immagino raccolti con pazienza da piccole mani emozionate e donati con orgoglio a mamme e nonne.
Niente di più: una tavola così dovrebbe lasciare campo libero ai piatti da portata, che in un vero pranzo di tradizione familiare italiana sono irrinunciabili. Ciao ciao impiattamento, qui regna la cucina di casa!

I love your beautiful table setting. The tablecloth especially is gorgeous. The idea of little hands giving a flower to the moms and grandmoms is especially adorable- and so Italian!
Your idea of a table setting that reflects the beautiful Italian culture is such a unique and genius idea. What is so good is the reflection of Italian pride and patriotism.
Many of us Americans of Italian origins feel so very proud of our Italian background. In fact you see much more of the Italian tricolore waved proudly and frequently here given any small excuse to do so! I suppose it is that old feeling of appreciating something of great value that has been lost. Many Italian Americans have such equal pride in both our cultural backgrounds that remains strong. I still cheer Italy on in soccer world cups as if I have gone crazy! And yet I feel 100% American, and am not sports-minded at all generally. There is some red, white and green that is still in the DNA I guess.
I am absolutely loving every last detail you’ve assembled here, Donna! Your descriptions fit the Italian family and feast perfectly. The vintage touches always draw my attention. That crisp white tablecloth with its hardanger and traditional embroideries are real eye-catchers, and the napkins look to be a match to the hardanger stitching!
The simplicity of the floral centerpiece easily transports one to the countryside in your choices. Just a beautiful table, celebrating your heritage! We Americans also celebrate Italian heritage. In my state, there is a festival in the northern part of the state each Labor Day (first Monday in Sept). It features food (naturally!), family and entertainment! My maternal grandfather immigrated in 1908 from Italy so, of course, we celebrate being Italian!

Your sweet description of a an Italian family dining at this table in the field is lovely. I can just imagine the laughter of the children as they run around the table while the adults sit and converse over coffee and indulge in a cannoli! Thank you for joining us for another hop!

It reminds me of a friend of mine, when it was discovered that there was a relative in Italy searching for her. They emailed back and forth and then she flew to Italy to visit and was so shocked to find about 50 people waiting for her at the airport…all claiming to be relatives and so anxious to hug and share pictures and stories of their grand parents and other relatives. The warmth and sincerity of the Italian people and the opening of their homes and food to her were nothing short of astounding. Just like that lunch or dinner you described….what a wonderful scene.

Simply beautiful! I am in love with both your centrepiece and your plates! I love the free, wild flower style of the poppies and daises. Your plates set against the crisp white tablecloth are stunning. I have heard that in Italy meals are taken in a slow and laid back manner. No rushing, and that each meal is a celebration in itself. Something that I admire and striving to do myself these days!

Ho sempre pensato che l’accostamento rosso-verde fosse un po’ troppo ardito, tranne che in natura, dove i due squillanti colori si armonizzano magicamente; devo però ricredermi, perché hai saputo scegliere i pezzi giusti e ne è risultata una tavola allegra ed elegantemente italiana: la serberò per il prossimo 2 giugno! 🇮🇹
In effetti, rispetto a quando ero scolaretta negli anni ’60, il povero Tricolore è andato giù di moda: il 2 giugno scorso volevo apparecchiare con qualche gadget, avendo a pranzo i nipotini in età scolare cui spiegare qualcosa sulla festa, ma non ho trovato assolutamente nulla in giro, mentre durante i Mondiali di calcio i supermercati rigurgitano di tricolori… Idem a scuola, i miei allievi conoscevano l’inno di Mameli perché cantato ai Mondiali o agli Europei… 🙄
